The Lord on the night before He sacrificed His life for love us instituted two great sacraments- the Holy Priesthood and the Holy Eucharist. The sacrament of priesthood allows us to have the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to receive Holy Communion, to cleanse our souls through the Sacrament of Reconciliation/confession, to receive the last anointing when we are ready to leave this world and meet Our Savior. Without priests we can’t have any of that.

The presence of priests and most importantly holy priests in our life is crucial for our growth in the spiritual life. However priests are still human with the same weaknesses we have despite the fact that God blessed them with more grace and authority. The enemy attacks them even more than he attacks us. So often we get distracted pointing to their mistakes; we lack true charity as St Therese defines it.
True charity consists in putting up with all one's neighbors fault's; never being surprised by his weakness, and being inspired by the least of his virtues. |

Let’s not criticize them but pray and sacrifice for them. This is an invitation for all of us to pray more for them.

First Novena to Saint John Vianney (June 29 - July 7)

St. John Vianney, you exemplified what a holy priest of Christ should be. Your patience and fortitude in the confessional demonstrated the mercy of God to the penitents who sought forgiveness for their sins.
Like Christ, you were gracious and merciful, yet also you called your flock to repentance and amendment of life. Help me through your powerful intercession along the path to sanctity that our Lord has prepared for me.

You lived by the motto that life was loving while suffering and suffering in order to love. You were undaunted, O good and faithful servant of the Lord, and your strong faith brought you closer to Jesus every day of your life.
O Saint John Vianney, you are the patron of all priests, religious, seminarians and of our parish. You know that each of us must trust in the Lord with our whole heart and if we are to serve Christ we too must take up our cross and follow Him even when it means following Him to Calvary. O revered Curé of Ars, as a child you were seen building a shrine to the Blessed Mother. You dedicated your life to her, entrusting your priesthood to her care. You begged the pilgrims that flocked to your doorstep to pray the rosary to honor Mary, our Mother. You told them and us of your great love of our Lady by saying: “We have only to turn to the Blessed Mother to be heard. Her heart is all love”.
O Saint John Vianney, you had to struggle against many barriers to become the esteemed priest that you were. Help us in our struggles to pattern our lives after that of our heavenly Mother, to be full of love for God and for our neighbor. Inspire priests, religious and seminarians to consecrate their lives to their Mother in heaven. May priests throughout the world never desert Christ, but remain, as Mary did, at the foot of the cross.

O revered Curé of Ars, your greatest joy in this world was the real presence of Jesus in the tabernacle as you prayed for hours in His presence. You, who each day, with great love, received the Lord in Holy Communion, help me develop a fervor like yours and a longing each day for Jesus in the Eucharist.

O revered Curé of Ars, you taught men to pray daily: “O my God, come to me, so that You may dwell in me and I may dwell in You”. You were the embodiment of this prayer. You gave your pilgrims hope by your words of prayer which were full of love of God. Your zeal for the salvation of souls was manifested by your total self-surrender to God expressed in your constant service to others. Help us to love God by being of service to our neighbor, whom-ever that may be.
O Saint John Vianney, teach me to pray that God will come and dwell in me if only I ask Him into my heart. I know that the salvation of my soul is the fulfillment of my existence. Help me to bring others to the love of God. Let your prayer be mine: “If I really love God, I will greatly desire to see Him loved by all the world”.

O revered Curé of Ars, you spent many 12 to 14 hour days in the confessional. Pilgrims came from far-off places to you for guidance, counsel, and forgiveness of their sins. Though you hated sin, the sinner was always welcomed with love and compassion.
O Saint John Vianney, by your shining example, grant me a love of the sacrament of reconciliation. Teach me that it is in confessing my sins that God’s mercy is poured out upon me and I draw nearer to Christ. Obtain for me a deep hatred of sin and the grace to resist temptation.

Later you admonished those around you: “You must work and fight as long as you are in the world”.

You, who have directed so many souls towards the heights of virtue, defend me against temptations and obtain for me the strength to conquer them.

O revered Curé of Ars, yours was a life of humbleness. You wore an old cassock, you ate meager meals. You counseled your pilgrims to remain humble, to remain simple, and the more one is so the more good he will do. You taught that before the throne of God we are one of His creatures made to glorify God and praise Him in all things. Your simplicity of soul and your uncluttered way of life have given us a role model to lead us to sanctity.
O Saint John Vianney, at those times that I forget that I am totally dependant on God for everything, plead my case to allow me to see that without my Creator nothing is possible and that I must rely on Him for everything. O revered Curé of Ars, you lived in an age of political upheaval and war, a time when men turned their backs on God. In assigning you to Ars, your bishop warned you that it was a parish where there was no love. He wished for you to be a priest who would enable the people to know the love of God. Not only did you renew your congregation, but your holy reputation soon spread and through your efforts many people were drawn to a life of devotion to God.

JULY 30: CONFESSOR OF SOULS
O Holy Priest of Ars, you knew how important was a good confession for the Christian life. It was to procure the happy fruits of millions of souls that you agreed to be in an uncomfortable confessional, which was like a prison, up to 15 to 16 hours on certain days.
I will try to develop the habit of frequent confession, to prepare properly each time and to have always regret for my sins, so that the grace of final perseverance but also the sanctification of my soul will be assured. Ask this grace for me.
