SPICE for the married couple
The Creighton Model FertilityCare System strengthens the marital bonding through SPICE by assisting couples in discovering the “inner soul” of their human sexuality. It teaches couples to distinguish between sexual contact and genital contact.
Genital Contact is any physical contact of the male and female genital organs. Sexual contact is to be specifically distinguished from genital contact because it is the “contact” of the total person one to the other. Such contact includes genital contact but is much more than genital contact. In fact, most of the time, since it is much broader concept, the physical act of intercourse is not involved. Sexual contact involves true sexual interaction and is therefore multidimensional. It is Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional. While genital contact is to be avoided during the days of fertility if it is the intention to avoid pregnancy, sexual contact is never to be avoided.
By avoiding genital contact on a periodic basis, there is natural tendency for the couple to communicate in other, non-genital ways. Such communication really forms the foundation for a joyful and lasting marriage relationship. When genital contact becomes the primary focus of the relationship, the communicative aspects of one’s personality are left undeveloped. Trust in a relationship comes from the development of non-genital forms of communication. With this, a true communion between man and woman can develop which is liberating, loving and permanent. In addition, when such love exists, the genital union takes on a deeper meaning and its quality is elevated.
SPICE is very beneficial for couples and strengthens their marital bonding regardless of their intention in using the system ( avoid or achieve pregnancy).

Incorporating SPICE daily in our married life
Years ago, through the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, we learned about SPICE which is part of every relationship whether you realize it or not. Throughout the day, we do different things for each other to show love and we started to build on SPICE in our relationship by being more intentional in doing things for each other. However, our nightly house meeting has been the culmination of our daily SPICE activities. I am excited to share it with you; it has been allowing me and my husband to draw closer to each other. We hope you can benefit from it as you need. This lasts anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour depending on the events of the day. One thing for sure, doing this daily has helped greatly in not reacting and dealing with things in the heat of the moment but responding with love and addressing the situation with reason, truth and charity.
These questions and the closing prayer while holding hands fall under different categories of SPICE (Spiritual – praying, Physical – holding hands , Creative/Communicative – dialogue and discussion of the questions, Emotional – expressing our emotions of joy, disappointment…
- In 2020, we heard from a friend priest, a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal, that the friars (like most religious probably) schedule a weekly house meeting to discuss the events of the week, preaching requests, etc..
- In December 2020, the Lord put on my heart to start spending more time with my husband in the evening and share 3 blessings daily before the end of the day.
- In February 2021, we attended a retreat for married couples in Alabama. The presenting couple (Dan & Stephanie Burke) shared with us two questions they use daily at night.
- How can I serve you better?
- How can I love you more?
- As an CFCE, after conducting a session at the on-site Visit with FCPI, I discuss their presentation asking them 4 questions. I found the last three questions to be helpful for us
- What didn’t you like about what you did?
- If anything, what would you do differently?
- What help do you need from me?
- Share 3 blessings of the day.
- What was the least event/thing you liked today?
- If anything, what would you do differently? What Help do you need from me?
- How can I serve you better?
- How can I love you more?
- What is your schedule tomorrow?
- Share one light from you mental prayer time today
- Affirm each other with one positive comment/compliment based on something that happened today.
- Closing prayer - Our Father, one Hail Mary and Hail Joseph.

SPICE and the single woman
True sexuality involves the whole person. We are called to be sexually whole 24/7 whether we are single or married. As a result, living out SPICE is not limited to those who are engaged or married. SPICE helps woman to live out her vocation and be the woman God is calling her to be.

SPICE and teens
Today, the teens are receiving wrong messages daily from this hypersexualized culture we live in and are being pressured by peers to be involved in expressing themselves and love to each other in ways that leave them broken an empty. Since they are exposed to sex on a daily basis through social media, TV and movies, we have the responsibility of helping them to understand the true meaning of their sexuality and to live out SPICE in their daily lives. For more ideas for young women to have a fulfilling life, please check out pages 40-42 of the SPICE ebook written by Holly Baril, Creighton FertilityCare Practitioner, Director In Touch Fertility Care Services.
